Omega Seamaster 176.001 “Jedi”: Legendary Automatic Chronograph
Origins and Onomastic Confusion
The Omega Seamaster 176.001 is an automatic chronograph launched in 1971, belonging to Omega’s sports watch series that capitalized on the success of the Seamaster line. However, its nickname “Jedi” has been a subject of controversy among collectors. Originally, the name was coined by watch expert Chuck Maddox in the 1990s to refer to the manual-winding model 145.024 (with caliber 861), inspired by the aesthetic of Star Wars13. It wasn’t until 2007 that the auction house Antiquorum mistakenly labeled the 176.001 as “Jedi” in its OmegaMania catalog, popularizing the misunderstanding13. Despite the confusion, the 176.001 developed its own legacy as an iconic piece of the 1970s.
