The history of Zenith began in 1865 in Le Locle, Switzerland, when Georges Favre-Jacot, a young watchmaker of only 22 years old, founded the company. Favre-Jacot had a revolutionary vision: to create high-precision watches using an integrated production approach, where all parts were manufactured under one roof. This innovative method laid the groundwork for what we now know as watchmaking manufacture.
The birth of Zenith and its focus on precision
The name Zenith was adopted in 1911, inspired by the word that means “the highest point in the sky,” symbolizing the constant pursuit of excellence. From its beginnings, the brand stood out for its commitment to precision, winning numerous awards in chronometry competitions. In 1903, the Neuchâtel Observatory awarded a Zenith watch the top prize for precision, solidifying its reputation as one of the world’s most reliable brands.
The 1940s Tricompax chronograph
In the 1940s decade, Zenith launched one of its most iconic models: the Tricompax chronograph. This watch was characterized by its elegant and functional design, with three subdials displaying the chronograph, calendar, and small second functions. The Tricompax became a horological icon, admired for its mechanical complexity and sophisticated aesthetics.
The movement used in the Tricompax was the caliber 136, known for its precision and durability. This chronograph was not only a functional tool but also a symbol of status and taste, attracting collectors and enthusiasts from around the world.
Zenith and its legacy in watchmaking
Over the years, Zenith has maintained its reputation as an innovative brand. In 1969, it introduced the El Primero, one of the world’s first high-frequency automatic chronograph movements, capable of measuring time with a precision of one-tenth of a second. This movement became a milestone in watchmaking history and is still used in many of its watches today.
The Tricompax today
The 1940s Tricompax chronograph continues to be highly valued by collectors, not only for its timeless design but also for its historical significance. It represents a golden age of watchmaking, where craftsmanship and innovation combined to create unique pieces. Today, Zenith has relaunched modern versions of the Tricompax, maintaining its classic essence while incorporating current technologies.
Legacy and recognition
Zenith is a brand that has made an indelible mark on the watchmaking industry. From its beginnings in Le Locle to its most recent innovations, the brand has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to precision, quality, and design. The 1940s Tricompax chronograph is a testament to this legacy, a piece that continues to inspire generations of watch lovers.
