ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL 1500, YEAR 1980, AUTOMATIC

The history of Rolex began in 1905 in London, when the German Hans Wilsdorf, along with his brother-in-law Alfred Davis, established a company dedicated to the distribution of wristwatches. At a time when pocket watches dominated the market and wristwatches were considered less accurate, Wilsdorf had an innovative vision: to design wristwatches that combined accuracy and elegance. In 1908, the Rolex brand was officially registered.

From London to Switzerland in search of precision

The name “Rolex” was chosen by Wilsdorf for its brevity, ease of pronunciation in multiple languages, and its distinctive sound when engraved on a watch. In 1919, the company moved its headquarters to Geneva, Switzerland, the epicenter of high-end watchmaking, with the aim of leveraging the excellence and reputation of the Swiss industry in precision watchmaking.

Innovations and technological advances

From its beginnings, Rolex stood out for introducing revolutionary advancements in the world of horology:

  • In 1926, the company introduced the Rolex Oyster, the first waterproof and airtight wristwatch, marking a milestone in durability and reliability.

  • In 1931, Rolex revolutionized the industry with the invention of the Perpetual mechanism, the first self-winding system with a patented rotor that allowed the watch to remain operational with the simple movement of the wrist.

  • In 1953, the company launched the Rolex Submariner, the first dive watch with a water resistance of up to 100 meters, becoming a benchmark in sports and exploration watches.

Prestige and international recognition

Over time, Rolex solidified its image as a symbol of luxury, precision, and durability. The brand has been linked to adventurers, pilots, athletes, and celebrities, strengthening its reputation as one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world. Its models have accompanied expeditions to the most extreme points of the planet, from the depths of the ocean to the summit of Mount Everest.

Today, Rolex remains one of the most exclusive and respected watch brands globally, admired by both collectors and watch connoisseurs, thanks to its unmatched quality and historical legacy.
