The history of Certina dates back to 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth established their own watch manufacturing in an annex of their home. The company, originally named Kurth Frères, began by producing watch components and gradually evolved into making complete watches. In 1939, the company officially adopted the name Certina, derived from the Latin term “certus”, meaning “reliable” or “trustworthy”. In 1959, the brand introduced its DS (Double Security) system, which significantly enhanced shock resistance and water resistance, making Certina a popular choice among explorers and athletes.

Thanks to its DS system, Certina watches have been involved in numerous expeditions and extreme events:

• In 1960, a Certina DS watch accompanied a Swiss expedition to the Himalayas, operating flawlessly in extreme cold and altitude conditions.
• In 1969, another Certina model was part of the Tektite I expedition in the Caribbean Sea, where scientists lived underwater for months, and the watch demonstrated exceptional resistance to the underwater environment.
