The history of Tissot dates back to 1853, in the Swiss town of Le Locle, when Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Émile Tissot founded a small watchmaking workshop under the name Charles-Félicien Tissot & Son. From its beginnings, the brand stood out for creating pocket watches with sophisticated designs, using innovative materials and advanced manufacturing techniques, which allowed it to establish itself as a benchmark in the Swiss watch industry.
A pioneering spirit from the beginning
Tissot was one of the first Swiss brands to expand internationally. In 1858, Charles-Émile Tissot traveled to Russia, where his watches gained great popularity, especially among the local aristocracy. The brand’s reputation grew thanks to the quality and precision of its creations, becoming a preferred choice for those seeking highly reliable watches. During these years, Tissot experimented with uncommon materials for the time, such as stone and mother-of-pearl, differentiating itself from other Swiss firms.
Expansion and technological advances
Throughout the 20th century, Tissot consolidated its global presence, introducing innovations that marked milestones in watchmaking history. In 1930, it introduced the Tissot Antimagnetic, the first wristwatch capable of resisting the influence of magnetic fields, a key advancement in improving watch precision. During these decades, Tissot strengthened its relationship with the sports world, designing highly resistant watches for various disciplines.
Merge with Omega and creation of SSIH
That same year, Tissot joined forces with Omega, giving rise to the Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère (SSIH), one of the most influential watchmaking conglomerates in Switzerland and a precursor to the current Swatch Group. This alliance allowed Tissot to leverage Omega’s resources and infrastructure, facilitating its growth and consolidation in the international market.
Adaptation during the quartz crisis
The arrival of quartz technology in the 1970s severely affected the traditional watchmaking industry, leading to the disappearance of many Swiss brands. However, Tissot managed to stay afloat thanks to its adaptability. In the 1980s, the brand launched innovative models such as the Tissot RockWatch (1985), made with natural stone, as well as watches with unusual materials like wood and mother-of-pearl. This differentiating strategy helped Tissot capture the market’s attention and stay relevant in an increasingly competitive environment.
Tissot today
Currently, Tissot is part of the Swatch Group and remains true to its philosophy of offering high-quality Swiss watches at affordable prices. The brand has managed to combine tradition and modernity in iconic collections such as the Tissot PRX, Le Locle, and T-Touch, integrating the latest technology without losing its classic essence. Furthermore, it continues to play a key role in sports, serving as the official timekeeper for prestigious events like the Tour de France and the NBA, strengthening its image within the sports world.
Thanks to its ability to evolve and its constant search for innovation, Tissot remains one of the most valued watch brands worldwide. Its legacy of over 170 years, marked by Swiss quality and accessibility, makes it a preferred choice for watch enthusiasts and those seeking a reliable and elegant timepiece.
