Origins and Foundation
The history of Seiko began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur named Kintaro Hattori opened a watch sales and repair shop in the Ginza district of Tokyo. His business thrived, and in 1892, he took a bold step by acquiring a disused factory and founding Seikosha, which literally means “house of exquisite craftsmanship.” There, he began producing wall clocks, and in 1895 he launched his first pocket watch, the Time Keeper, laying the foundation for the company’s future.
