Seiko’s story is a fascinating tale of constant innovation, boundless ambition, and the relentless pursuit of absolute precision. From its humble beginnings as a small shop in the heart of Tokyo to becoming a global giant in watchmaking, Seiko has repeatedly challenged the status quo, revolutionizing the industry on multiple occasions and demonstrating that excellence knows no boundaries.

Origins and Foundation

Seiko’s story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur named Kintaro Hattori opened a watch sales and repair shop in the Ginza district of Tokyo. His business thrived, and in 1892, he took a bold step by acquiring a defunct factory and founding Seikosha, which literally means “house of exquisite craftsmanship.” There, he began producing wall clocks, and in 1895, he launched his first pocket watch, the Time Keeper, laying the foundation for the company’s future.

The First Wristwatch and the Birth of the Seiko Brand

In 1913, Seikosha achieved a historic milestone by introducing the Laurel, the first wristwatch made in Japan. In a time when pocket watches dominated the market, Kintaro Hattori demonstrated his forward-thinking vision. The devastating Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 destroyed the company’s factory and headquarters, but Hattori, with resilience, decided to reinvent himself. In December of that same year, the company launched a completely new watch that in 1924 would become the first watch to bear the Seiko name on the dial, marking the true birth of the brand as we know it today.

Technical Consolidation: Diashock and the Automatic Revolution

In the post-war period, Seiko accelerated its technological development. In 1956, it launched the Marvel, which housed the brand’s first fully in-house movement and introduced the Diashock anti-shock system, Seiko’s response to the Swiss Incabloc. In 1959, it presented the Gyro Marvel, the first automatic watch equipped with the innovative “Magic Lever” winding system, a mechanism of such extraordinary efficiency that it is still used in Seiko’s automatic watches today.

The Birth of Grand Seiko and Chronometric Excellence

1960 was a pivotal year: Seiko launched Grand Seiko, a line of watches created with the ambitious mission of challenging Swiss supremacy and demonstrating that Japan could produce watches of the highest quality. The first Grand Seiko, manually wound, was meticulously crafted to compete with the best Swiss chronometers, setting new standards for precision, readability, and durability.

Seiko and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics

In 1964, Seiko was appointed the official timekeeper of the Tokyo Olympics, supplying more than a thousand timing devices specifically designed for the occasion. This responsibility drove the brand to develop time measurement technologies of unprecedented precision, demonstrating to the world its technical capabilities. That same year, it launched the Crown Chronograph, the first wrist chronograph in Japan.

The First Diving Watches and Exploration

In 1965, Seiko introduced the legendary 62MAS, the first diving watch made in Japan, with a water resistance of 150 meters. It was chosen by the 8th Japanese Antarctic Expedition, solidifying its reputation for robustness and reliability in extreme conditions. This model laid the foundation for the iconic Prospex line, which continues to this day.

The Quartz Revolution: The Seiko Quartz Astron

On December 25, 1969, Seiko forever changed the history of watchmaking with the launch of the Seiko Quartz Astron, the world’s first quartz wristwatch. With an accuracy of 5 seconds per month, a hundred times superior to any mechanical watch, and a one-year autonomy, the Astron triggered the so-called “quartz crisis” that shook the foundations of the Swiss watch industry. That same year, Seiko also introduced the Cal. 6139, one of the world’s first automatic chronographs with a column wheel and vertical clutch.

Innovation in the 1970s: Titanium and Digital Displays

The 1970s saw new global milestones. In 1973, Seiko launched the first watch with a six-digit LCD display. In 1975, it introduced the Professional Diver’s 600m, the world’s first dive watch made with titanium, capable of withstanding the extreme pressures of saturation diving with helium.

The Birth of Spring Drive and the GPS Era

After decades of research, in 1999 Seiko introduced the revolutionary Spring Drive movement, a hybrid that combines the power of a true mechanical mainspring with the precision of an electronic quartz regulator, offering a perfectly smooth sweep seconds hand and exceptional accuracy. In 2012, the brand once again surprised the world with the Astron GPS Solar, the world’s first wristwatch with GPS and solar power, capable of automatically adjusting the time to any time zone in the world by receiving satellite signals.

Seiko Today: A Universe of Collections

Today, Seiko is a complex group that encompasses multiple brands and collections for all audiences:

  • Grand Seiko: The luxury line, with high-end mechanical, Spring Drive, and quartz movements, artisanal finishes with Zaratsu polishing, and designs inspired by Japanese nature.

  • Prospex: The professional sports collection, famous for its diving, mountaineering, and adventure watches, inheriting the spirit of the 62MAS.

  • Presage: Elegant dress watches with mechanical movements, often incorporating traditional Japanese crafts such as Shippo enamel.

  • Seiko 5 Sports: The entry-level to the automatic world, celebrated for its affordability, reliability, and diverse designs.

  • Astron: The high-tech range with GPS Solar, successor to the pioneer of 1969.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Overcoming Adversity

Seiko’s history is a testament to how vision, innovation, and persistence can build an indelible legacy. From Kintaro Hattori and his small shop in Ginza to the complex Spring Drive and GPS Solar movements, Seiko has repeatedly shown that being “always one step ahead” is not just a motto, but a philosophy. Its ability to innovate in all areas—mechanical, quartz, electronic—and to offer quality in all segments, from the most affordable to haute horlogerie, make it a fundamental pillar of the global watchmaking industry.
