SEIKO BULLHEAD 6138-0040, CHRONOGRAPH YEAR 1971

Categories: ,

The Seiko 6138-0040, better known as the Seiko Bullhead, is one of the most iconic automatic chronographs from the Japanese brand. Launched in the 1970s, it became an iconic watch thanks to its unique design and advanced technology for that time.

Origin and the innovative caliber 6138

This model belongs to the Seiko 6138 series, an evolution of the brand’s first automatic chronographs, which introduced significant improvements. The 6138 movement, which powered the Bullhead, was an automatic caliber with manual winding option, a chronograph function with double subdial (30-minute and 12-hour counters), and a day-date complication.

The 6138-0040 was designed to be robust and precise, becoming a highly appreciated watch for its reliability and for being one of the first Japanese-made automatic chronographs to offer these features.

Iconic design: the “Bullhead”

The nickname “Bullhead” comes from its distinctive design with the chronograph pushers located at the top of the case instead of the sides, resembling the horns of a bull. This design had a functional purpose: to prevent accidental activations and improve ergonomics for pilots and drivers, the target audience of this model.

The stainless steel case had an approximate diameter of 43 mm, with a considerable thickness giving it a robust and sporty look. The crown was located on the top, next to the pushers, reinforcing its distinctive aesthetic.

The Bullhead 6138-0040 was available in two dial versions:

  • Brown with gold subdials (the most iconic and sought after by collectors).
  • Black with blue subdials, more sober but equally eye-catching.

Both versions included an internal tachymeter bezel adjusted by a secondary crown, a very useful feature for measuring speeds.

A cult watch among collectors

Over the years, the Seiko Bullhead 6138-0040 has gained a cult status among vintage watch enthusiasts. Its unique design, combined with the reliability of the 6138 movement, has made it a highly coveted piece in the collectible watch market.

Today, it remains a reference in the history of automatic chronographs, solidifying Seiko as one of the most innovative brands in the world of watchmaking.
