The Hamilton brand was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States. Hamilton began its history as an American watch company focused on precision and reliability at a time when watches were essential for the punctuality of trains, which had to avoid collisions and maintain their schedules. For this reason, their early pocket watches, called “The Watch of Railroad Accuracy,” were widely used by U.S. railway companies and helped the brand gain fame for its precision.

Expansion and success in aviation

Over time, Hamilton expanded its reach to the aviation market. In the 1930s, it became the watch supplier for major U.S. airlines, and its aviation watches were used by pilots and navigators for their reliability and durability. During World War II, Hamilton suspended the production of consumer watches to focus on manufacturing military watches, supplying over a million watches to the United States Armed Forces, which solidified its reputation in military timepieces.

Innovation and iconic watches

In the 1950s, Hamilton released some models that made history. In 1957, it created the Hamilton Ventura, the world’s first electric watch, characterized by its futuristic design and triangular shape. The Ventura gained popularity and became an icon when it was worn by Elvis Presley in the movie Blue Hawaii. It also pioneered the development of digital watches in the 1970s, launching the Pulsar, the first digital wristwatch, which was a significant advancement in watch technology.

Move to Switzerland and focus on cinema

In 1974, Hamilton was acquired by the Swatch Group, leading the company to move to Biel, Switzerland, where it began to manufacture watches with Swiss watchmaking quality and precision. Since then, Hamilton has been known for its Swiss quality watches with American designs, maintaining a unique identity that blends American tradition and Swiss technology.

Hamilton has also had a close relationship with cinema; its watches have appeared in over 500 Hollywood films, including classics like Men in Black and Interstellar, which has reinforced its iconic image.
