Zenith’s story began in 1865 in Le Locle, Switzerland, when young watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot, at just 22 years old, founded the company with the vision of creating precise and fully integrated timepieces. Favre-Jacot was a pioneer, establishing a watchmaking manufacture where all production stages were conducted under one roof, an innovative concept at the time that ensured exceptional quality control.
Innovations and reputation for precision
Zenith quickly stood out for the accuracy of its chronometers. In 1899, it launched its first pocket chronograph, solidifying its reputation as a high-quality brand. By 1911, the company officially adopted the name Zenith, inspired by the highest point in the sky, symbolizing its pursuit of ultimate precision. Over the years, Zenith earned numerous chronometry awards, establishing itself as one of the most recognized manufacturers of watch movements.
The El Primero and automatic chronographs
In 1969, Zenith unveiled its most famous creation: the El Primero movement. It was among the first automatic chronograph movements in the world and stood out for its high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, allowing time measurement to the nearest tenth of a second. This achievement marked a milestone in horology, making El Primero an icon. Its influence was so profound that prestigious brands, including Rolex, chose it for some of their models.
Resurgence after the Quartz Crisis
Like many Swiss brands, Zenith faced challenges during the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s when Japanese quartz watches threatened traditional manufacturers. However, Zenith persevered, refocusing on its mechanical roots in the 1980s. The brand’s revival was driven by the enduring prestige of its El Primero movement, which remained highly valued in high-end watchmaking.
Zenith today
Today, Zenith is part of the LVMH group and is renowned for its commitment to innovation and precision. The brand has expanded its catalog with modern collections like Defy and Pilot, while preserving the legacy of its famous El Primero. Zenith continues to be globally revered for its heritage and its pioneering contributions to the history of watchmaking.
