The history of Benrus began in 1921 in the city of New York, United States, when Swiss immigrant Benjamin Lazrus founded the company with his brothers. Benjamin Lazrus decided to name the company Benrus as a combination of his own first and last name. The Lazrus family, with experience in watchmaking, started by importing high-quality movements from Switzerland and assembling them in their own design cases in New York, focusing on creating elegant and affordable watches.
Success and popularity in the U.S.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Benrus became a popular brand in the United States thanks to its emphasis on quality and design. During this time, Benrus began to stand out with its well-built and affordable wristwatch models, ideal for the American market. The brand was also known for its innovative advertising campaigns, including advertisements in theaters and high-circulation magazines.
Association with the military and rise during World War II
World War II was a turning point for Benrus. During the conflict, the brand supplied watches to the United States Army, designing reliable and durable military watches that met the demands of the battlefield. This gave Benrus an excellent reputation for durability and precision, solidifying its position in the American market.
Iconic models and growth
In the 1950s and 1960s, Benrus launched some of its most iconic models, such as the Benrus Sky Chief, a highly popular aviator watch among commercial and military pilots, and the Benrus Type I and Type II, specifically designed for special forces and combat divers. These models have become collector’s items due to their robust design and their connection to military history.
Decline and revival
In the 1970s, Benrus faced challenges due to the quartz crisis, when more affordable Japanese quartz watches began to dominate the market, displacing many mechanical watch manufacturers. This led to Benrus declining and eventually ceasing its operations. However, in recent years, the brand has experienced a revival, reclaiming some of its classic designs and launching new editions that pay tribute to its history.
Today, Benrus remains a brand that evokes nostalgia for classic American watches and is appreciated by collectors and horology enthusiasts for its military heritage and elegant, functional design.
