Longines watches have their origin in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, when Auguste Agassiz established a watchmaking workshop with two partners. This small establishment, called Agassiz & Compagnie, began by making pocket watches, quickly standing out in the Swiss market due to the precision and quality of its creations.

Birth of the Longines brand

In 1867, the company built its first factory known as Les Longines (meaning “the long meadows” in French), a name that would give identity to the brand. That same year, they introduced their first in-house movement, the calibre 20A, which won a medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition. This innovation allowed Longines to centralize its production completely, ensuring exceptional quality and establishing itself as a distinguished brand.

Recognition and global expansion

The prestige of Longines grew rapidly:

• In 1889, the brand trademarked its famous winged-hourglass logo, becoming the oldest watchmaker with a registered emblem still in use today.
• In 1912, Longines was a pioneer in using electromechanical devices for timing sports competitions, solidifying its reputation in high-precision timekeeping and becoming the official timekeeper of multiple international sporting events.
