The beginnings of Seiko
Seiko’s journey dates back to 1881 in Tokyo, Japan, where Kintaro Hattori, a 21-year-old visionary, opened a store dedicated to the sales and maintenance of watches. His ambition was to create high-precision timepieces, and in 1892 he achieved this goal by founding the Seikosha manufacture (from Japanese: “Seiko” = “precision” or “achievement”, and “sha” = “workshop”). Initially, the company produced wall clocks, but gradually shifted its production to pocket and wristwatches.

The pioneer of Japanese watchmaking

In 1913, Seikosha introduced the Laurel, considered the first wrist chronometer developed in Japanese territory. This achievement was historic as Japan lacked watchmaking experience at that time. The company emerged as a national innovator and laid the foundation to become a global benchmark in the watch industry.

In 1969, Seiko made history with the launch of the Seiko Astron, the first portable quartz watch on the planet. This invention triggered a radical change in the industry, offering superior accuracy and lower costs compared to conventional mechanical mechanisms. Quartz became the standard and continues to dominate the current market.
