YEMA “ART DECÒ” 50s, MANUAL WINDING

Categories: ,

Yema is one of the most emblematic French watchmaking brands, recognized for its precision, innovative design, and watches created for explorers, aviators, and divers. Founded in 1948 by watchmaker Henry Louis Belmont, the brand quickly established itself as a reference in France, thanks to its models designed to withstand extreme conditions in various environments: land, air, and sea.

Origins and growth of Yema in watchmaking

From its beginnings, Yema focused on producing robust and reliable watches, with a special focus on sports and professional models. During the 1950s and 1960s, the brand gained recognition for its innovation and the development of pieces designed for pilots, divers, and adventurers.

One of the most important milestones in Yema’s history occurred in 1963, with the presentation of the Yema Superman, a diving watch capable of withstanding depths of up to 300 meters. Its design included a bezel locking system, offering exceptional precision underwater. This model became an icon in the diving world, used by both professionals and military units.

In 1970, Yema launched the Yema Rallygraf, a chronograph inspired by the world of motorsport and worn by legendary drivers such as Mario Andretti. Its design with contrasting subdials, known as “panda,” along with its high precision, made it a highly valued watch among motorsports enthusiasts.

Another standout model in Yema’s history was the Yema Spationaute, chosen in 1982 by French astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien for his mission on the Soyuz T-6 spacecraft. This watch became the first French model to travel to space, enhancing Yema’s reputation in extreme environments.

Expansion and evolution of the brand

During the 1980s and 1990s, Yema continued to innovate, developing both automatic and quartz watches. Despite the growing competition from Swiss and Japanese watchmaking, the brand managed to maintain its identity, focusing on the durability and quality of its pieces.

In 2009, Yema decided to return to its roots with the relaunch of its mechanical watch collection, focusing on craftsmanship and improving its calibers. Classic models such as the Yema Superman Heritage and the Yema Navygraf were redesigned with modern materials, preserving the vintage style that made them famous.

Today, Yema remains a prestigious international brand, known for its legacy of innovation, quality, and adventurous spirit, an essence it has kept alive since 1948.
