Tissot: Swiss Watchmaking Innovation and Tradition
The history of Tissot began in 1853, in the Swiss town of Le Locle, when Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Émile Tissot established a small watchmaking workshop under the name Charles-Félicien Tissot & Son. From the beginning, the brand stood out for crafting refined pocket watches, incorporating innovative materials and advanced manufacturing techniques, allowing it to position itself as a reference within the Swiss watchmaking industry.
A pioneering spirit from its origins
Tissot was one of the first Swiss companies to expand beyond Europe. In 1858, Charles-Émile Tissot embarked on a journey to Russia, where his watches gained great acceptance, especially among the country’s aristocracy. The brand’s reputation grew thanks to the quality and precision of its timepieces, becoming a preferred choice for those seeking highly reliable watches. During these years, Tissot experimented with unconventional materials for the time, such as stone and mother-of-pearl, distinguishing itself from other Swiss brands.
Expansion and technological advancements
Throughout the 20th century, Tissot solidified its global presence, introducing innovations that marked watchmaking history. In 1930, it presented the Tissot Antimagnetic, the first wristwatch capable of resisting the influence of magnetic fields, a key development in improving watch precision. During these decades, Tissot strengthened its relationship with the world of sports, designing highly resistant watches for various disciplines.
Merge with Omega and creation of SSIH
That same year, Tissot partnered with Omega, giving rise to the Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère (SSIH), one of Switzerland’s most influential watchmaking conglomerates and a precursor to the current Swatch Group. This alliance allowed Tissot to leverage Omega’s resources and infrastructure, facilitating its growth and consolidation in the international market.
Adaptation during the quartz crisis
The advent of quartz technology in the 1970s affected the traditional watchmaking industry, leading to the disappearance of many Swiss brands. However, Tissot managed to stay afloat thanks to its adaptability. In the 80s, the brand launched innovative models like the Tissot RockWatch (1985), made with natural stone, as well as watches featuring uncommon materials like wood and mother-of-pearl. This differentiated strategy helped Tissot capture market attention and stay relevant in an increasingly competitive environment.
Tissot today
Currently, Tissot is part of the Swatch Group and remains true to its philosophy of offering high-quality Swiss watches at accessible prices. The brand has successfully combined tradition and modernity in iconic collections such as Tissot PRX, Le Locle, and T-Touch, integrating the latest technology without losing its classic essence. Furthermore, it continues to play a key role in sports, serving as the official timekeeper for prestigious events like the Tour de France and the NBA, reinforcing its image in the world of sports.
Thanks to its ability to evolve and its constant pursuit of innovation, Tissot remains one of the most esteemed watch brands worldwide. Its legacy of over 170 years, characterized by Swiss quality and accessibility, makes it a preferred choice for watch enthusiasts and those seeking a reliable and elegant timepiece.
