Unlike other established brands, Chronographe Suisse was not a single company, but a collaboration between several small Swiss workshops that manufactured affordable chronographs with 18-carat gold cases. These watches were designed to offer the typical Swiss quality at a more accessible price, making them popular among those who wanted an elegant chronograph without the high cost associated with more exclusive brands.

Production and features

The highlight of the Chronographe Suisse was its lightweight design and extremely thin case, commonly called “onion skin” for its delicacy. Many of these watches included complications such as tachymeter and telemeter scales, allowing for speed and distance measurements. The dials featured a clean and functional design, available in various colors, while the movements were supplied by renowned manufacturers such as Valjoux, Landeron, and Venus. These pieces ensured reliable accuracy and were painstakingly assembled, despite being considered more affordable options.

Expansion and decline

During the 1950s and 1960s, these chronographs were widely exported, especially to Europe and Latin America, and became a symbol of accessible luxury. However, with the arrival of the quartz revolution in the 1970s, the demand for mechanical watches decreased significantly. The production of Chronographe Suisse was reduced and eventually disappeared from the market.
