The history of Certina dates back to 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth established their own watchmaking manufacture in an annex of their home. The company, initially named Kurth Frères, began by producing watch components, and gradually evolved to making whole watches. Name change and focus on durability

In 1939, the company officially adopted the name Certina, derived from the Latin term “certus”, meaning “safe” or “reliable”. This name reflected their dedication to the reliability and accuracy of their timepieces. During the 1950s, Certina began to stand out in the industry for its emphasis on robustness and resistance in their products. In 1959, the brand introduced its DS (Double Security) system, significantly improving shock and water resistance, making Certina a popular choice among explorers and athletes.

Contributions to watchmaking and explorations

Thanks to their DS system, Certina watches were featured in numerous expeditions and extreme events:

• In 1960, a Certina DS watch accompanied a Swiss expedition to the Himalayas, functioning flawlessly in extreme cold and high-altitude conditions.
• In 1969, another Certina model was part of the Tektite I expedition in the Caribbean Sea, where scientists lived underwater for months, and the watch showed exceptional resistance to the underwater environment.
