Longines watches have their roots in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, when Auguste Agassiz established a watchmaking workshop with two partners. This modest workshop, called Agassiz & Compagnie, began producing pocket watches, quickly standing out in the Swiss market for the quality and precision of its creations.
Birth of the Longines brand
In 1867, Longines built its first factory, named Les Longines (meaning “the long meadows” in French), from where its name originates. That same year, they developed their first in-house movement, the caliber 20A, which won a medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition. This breakthrough allowed Longines to control all its production, ensuring superior quality and consolidating its reputation as a prestigious brand.
Achievements and international fame
Longines’ reputation quickly expanded:
- In 1889, the brand trademarked its iconic winged hourglass logo, becoming the oldest watch brand with a registered logo still in use.
- In 1912, Longines pioneered the use of electromechanical devices to measure sporting events, reinforcing its reputation in the field of precision chronometry and establishing itself as the official timekeeper for numerous international sports events.
Innovation and luxury watchmaking
Throughout its history, Longines has maintained an innovative spirit, launching iconic collections such as the Longines Master Collection and the HydroConquest, combining Swiss precision with refined designs. Additionally, it has continued to develop advanced technologies, staying at the forefront of haute horlogerie and standing out for its focus on elegance and functionality.
Today, Longines is one of the most respected brands in the watchmaking world, recognized for its legacy of precision, elegance, and excellence in timekeeping.
