This manufacture, founded in the heart of the Valle de Joux, not only produced high-quality complete watches, but also became the most important movement workshop of the 20th century, supplying its famous calibers to renowned watch brands such as Omega, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. Its legacy lives on in some of the most iconic chronographs ever created, including the legendary Omega Speedmaster, the first watch on the Moon.

Origins and Foundation (1884-1920)

The history of Lemania began in 1884 when Alfred Lugrin, a self-taught precision mechanic enthusiast from the canton of Vaud, decided to establish his own workshop in the town of L’Orient, in the municipality of Chenit, within the Valle de Joux. Lugrin had gained experience working for LeCoultre et Cie (later Jaeger-LeCoultre) and his vision was to create a company specialized in the production of complicated movements. Under the name of A. Lugrin et Cie, the workshop started by manufacturing ébauches (movement blanks) for chronographs and minute repeater watches, quickly mechanizing its production for efficiency. The quality of their work was soon internationally recognized, earning gold medals at the 1906 Milan Universal Exhibition and the 1914 Swiss National Exhibition in Bern.

The Lemania-Lugrin Era and Alliance with SSIH (1920-1940)

After the death of Alfred Lugrin in 1920, his son-in-law, Marius Meylan, took over the company. In 1924, the company name was changed to Lemania-Lugrin SA, a name that referred to Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French). Under Meylan’s leadership, the company achieved the status of a manufacture, offering complete watches signed by Lemania in addition to their movements.

The Great Depression of the thirties hit the entire watch industry hard. To survive, Lemania made a crucial decision in 1932: to join the SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère) group, which already included Omega and Tissot. This alliance would prove to be one of the most significant milestones in watchmaking history, establishing a technical collaboration that would bear fruit for decades.

Creation of the CH 27 Caliber and Connection with Omega (1941-1950)

The pinnacle moment in Lemania‘s history came in 1941, with the brilliant watchmaker Albert Piguet. At just 27 years old, Piguet designed the CH 27 caliber, an integrated chronograph movement measuring 27 mm in diameter that would become one of the most successful and revered movements in Swiss watchmaking history. Its design was so advanced that it set a new standard for mechanical chronographs.

The commercial launch took place in 1942 in two versions: the 27 CHRO (with minute counter) and the 27 CHRO C12 (with minute and 12-hour counters). The latter, in particular, was adopted by Omega and rebranded as the caliber 321 from 1946 onwards, after a series of improvements that included an Incabloc shock protection system. This movement would become the heart of the Omega Speedmaster from its launch in 1957 to 1968.

In 1965, NASA certified the Speedmaster with the 321 caliber for all its manned flights, and in 1969 it accompanied Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface, earning the nickname “Moonwatch” forever. Simultaneously, the base of the CH 27 was supplied to other top-tier brands, including Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet, which used it in their most exclusive chronographs.

Continuous Innovation: New Generations of Calibers (1950-1970)

Building on the success of the CH 27, Lemania developed an impressive family of movements. The cam lever calibers of the 12xx series, simpler and more economical, were produced until the mid-sixties. In 1968 came the 18xx series, sturdier and more advanced, which equipped chronographs from Omega, Universal Genève, Girard-Perregaux, Panerai, and Breitling. In 1972, the automatic 13xx series was launched. And in 1978, the legendary caliber 5100 was born, a completely new automatic chronograph that became the favorite of military tool watch brands like Tutima, Sinn, and Orfina.

An almost forgotten chapter in Lemania‘s history is the development in 1947 of what was probably the first automatic chronograph in history, based on the CH 27. Although technically sound, Omega rejected its commercialization out of fear that customers might not like the noise of the limited oscillation winding rotor, delaying the arrival of automatic chronographs to the market by more than twenty years.

The Quartz Crisis and the Rebirth as Nouvelle Lemania (1980-1999)

The quartz crisis of the seventies severely affected the entire Swiss watch industry. The SSIH group, to reduce costs, separated from the Lemania factory in 1980. The following year, the Piaget group acquired the company, drastically reducing its workforce and renaming it as Nouvelle Lemania SA. This new stage allowed Heuer to equip some of their chronographs with Lemania movements.

In 1992, the investment fund Investcorp, which already owned the prestigious brand Breguet, took control of Nouvelle Lemania. Under this umbrella, Lemania continued supplying its calibers to major brands, and Breguet began using their movements in models such as the Type XX.

Acquisition by Breguet and Legacy (1999-Present)

In 1999, the Swatch Group acquired both the Breguet brand and Nouvelle Lemania, reintegrating the historic manufacture into the ecosystem it once belonged to. In 2009, as part of a strategic restructuring, the group decided to cease supplying movements to external companies, reserving the production of Nouvelle Lemania exclusively for Breguet. Finally, in 2010, Nouvelle Lemania was formally absorbed and renamed as Breguet, officially disappearing as an independent entity.

However, the legacy of Lemania remains more alive than ever. Their calibers, especially the CH 27/2310/321, are considered masterpieces of watchmaking engineering. Watches signed Lemania, produced in smaller quantities than the movements supplied to third parties, are highly sought after by collectors looking to own a piece of this history, often at more accessible prices than those of the major brands they supplied to.
