Its name referred to its key function: measuring time accurately at high speeds. This chronograph stood out for its legible design, featuring a tachymeter scale on the bezel, a pioneering feature that allowed for precise speed measurements.

From race tracks to outer space

In the mid-1960s, NASA began rigorous testing to select a reliable chronograph for its astronauts. The Speedmaster was subjected to extreme conditions of temperature, shocks, vibrations, and pressure, successfully passing all tests. In 1965, it was chosen as the official watch of NASA, receiving the certification of “Flight-Qualified for All Manned Space Missions.”.

On July 20, 1969, during the Apollo 11 mission, the Omega Speedmaster became the first watch on the Moon when Buzz Aldrin wore it on his wrist while stepping onto the lunar surface. Since then, this model has been known as the “Moonwatch”, solidifying its legendary status.
