Certina’s history began in 1888 in Grenchen, Switzerland, when brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth established their own watchmaking workshop in the annex of their home. Initially called Kurth Frères, the company focused on producing components before evolving into complete watch manufacturing. Their commitment to precision and quality soon earned them recognition in the Swiss market.

Name change and focus on durability

In 1939, the company adopted the name Certina, derived from the Latin word certus, meaning “sure” or “reliable.” This new name reflected their emphasis on reliability and precision. In the 1950s, Certina stood out for its robust designs, introducing the DS (Double Security) system in 1959. This innovation significantly improved shock and water resistance, making the brand a favorite among adventurers and sports enthusiasts.

Achievements in watchmaking and expeditions

The DS system established Certina’s reputation for durability during extreme conditions:

• In 1960, a Certina DS accompanied a Swiss expedition to the Himalayas, proving its reliability in freezing temperatures and high altitudes.
• In 1969, another Certina watch was part of the Tektite I underwater experiment in the Caribbean, where scientists lived underwater for months. The watch excelled in challenging marine environments.
